Nagori is one of the most renowned indigenous draught cattle breeds of India, originating from the Nagaur district of Rajasthan and also distributed in the adjoining districts of Jodhpur and Nokha tehsil of Bikaner. The breed derives its name from its home tract and is highly adapted to the harsh, arid, and semi-arid climatic conditions of western Rajasthan. Nagori cattle are reared under a semi-intensive management system, where animals graze over long distances in search of fodder and are supplemented with locally available tree leaves and grasses. The breed is primarily valued for draught and transportation purposes, and its bullocks are well known for their exceptional strength, speed, endurance, and agility. They are capable of performing heavy draught work in deep sandy soils while maintaining remarkable ease of movement, often described as having a horse-like gait. Animals are generally white or light grey in colour, with the head, face, and shoulders occasionally showing a slightly darker grey shade. They possess a long and narrow horse-like face, a white alert appearance, and medium-sized horns that emerge from the outer angles of the poll, extending outward before curving upward and inward at the tips.
Nagori cattle are characterized by their tall stature, strong feet, and powerful yet comparatively light bone structure, which contributes to their agility and efficiency as working animals. Although primarily a draught breed, cows produce a moderate quantity of milk with an average lactation yield of 603 kg and an average milk fat content of 5.8%. Adult cows have an average body length of 138 cm, height at withers of 124 cm, heart girth of 165 cm, and body weight of 318 kg, while adult bulls average 148 cm in height and 363 kg in body weight. The breed attains an average age at first calving of 47.37 months, with an average calving interval of 15.16 months. Because of their outstanding draught ability, endurance, and adaptation to resource-scarce environments, Nagori cattle remain one of India's most valuable indigenous breeds for sustainable agricultural operations in arid regions.
