African Boer Breed

The African Boer goat is one of the most famous meat goat breeds in the world, originally developed in South Africa and widely used for meat production and genetic improvement programs. This breed is easily recognized by its white body, reddish-brown head and neck, large, muscular frame, broad chest, long, pendulous ears, convex (Roman) nose, and backwards-curving horns in both males and females. Boer goats are highly valued for their rapid growth rate, heavy body weight, excellent carcass quality, and high dressing percentage, making them ideal for commercial meat production. They also show early maturity, high fertility, and good mothering ability, which increases productivity in farming systems. The average body weight of an adult buck ranges from 90–120 kg, while an adult doe weighs about 70–90 kg. In addition to meat production, Boer goats are widely used in crossbreeding programs to improve the growth and meat traits of local goat breeds. Although the breed originated in South Africa, it has successfully adapted to many regions of the world, including semi-arid and tropical areas of India, when proper nutrition, management, and healthcare are provided.
