Zalawadi Breed

Zalawadi goat is an indigenous breed mainly found in Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan, India, and is valued as a dual-purpose breed for both milk and meat production. It is primarily distributed in the Nandurbar and Dhule district of Maharashtra, as well as the Rajkot and Jamnagar regions from Gujrat and nearby areas of Rajasthan. Zalawadi goats are generally medium to large in size with a black or dark brown body colour, sometimes showing mixed colors. They have long, flat, drooping ears, a slightly convex head profile, twisted backwards-curving horns, and a medium-length hair coat. The breed is known for good milk production among indigenous goats, yielding about 1.5–2.5 litres of milk per day with a lactation length of around 150–200 days, while also showing good body growth suitable for meat production under field conditions. The average body weight of an adult buck ranges from 50–60 kg, while an adult doe weighs about 35–45 kg. Zalawadi goats are highly adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, efficiently utilising natural grazing and crop residues, which makes them well-suited for low-input farming systems and smallholder goat farmers, and they are also considered an important genetic resource for breeding programs in dry regions.
